The Next Step: Cookbook author and entrepreneur Sarah Pound

Sarah Pound’s catering business failed during COVID, which, coupled with the fact she had two small kids, made for a pretty tense and worrying time. But! Realising she had no control over well, pretty much anything, Sarah realised she needed something positive to focus on. She started filming her recipes on Instagram. She did 30 recipes in 30 days.

After a bit of a patchy start, she started posting regularly from 2022 and now has a following of more than 700,000 people at @wholesomebysarah. She has meals kits in Woolworths. Her first cookbook (also called ‘Wholesome by Sarah’) released this week, went to #1 in Amazon Australia and was re-printed multiple times before it even came out. Pretty incredible!

In this episode Katherine and Sarah talk about:

  • what things you can control and what you can’t
  • failure and how, out of a huge failure something great can grow
  • how talents combine in weird ways
  • her approach to social media, including how some people watch recipes with no intention of *ever* making them
  • gender and how she sometimes wishes her passion (cooking) didn’t correlate so much with traditional gender roles

Sarah’s favourite quotes are:

Be yourself.

What is meant for you will not pass you by.
